Description

No. 43 Foregate Street is a house that has been converted into a shop, built around 1840. The building is made of stucco and has a slate roof, featuring a double-depth plan that is incorporated into later structures. It stands two storeys high and has a three-window range.

On the first floor, there is a sill band, wide eaves, and a verge. The entrance, which is round-headed, is located in a forward break to the left end and has a doorcase with fluted pilasters, entablature blocks, and an open pediment, with a fanlight above a six-panel door. The ground floor windows have sills, eared architraves, and cornices, although they now feature 20th-century plate glass. The first floor includes a round-headed window at the left end with an architrave and an anthemion key in an Ionic aedicule. The other windows on this floor have architraves, friezes, and cornices supported by brackets with bulls' heads and front legs, which are now damaged. All windows are fitted with two-pane sashes. The building has an end truncated stack and is considered an unusual survival.
