Description
62 and 63 Foregate Street is a house that has been converted into an office, built around 1698. The front elevation was rebuilt in the late 20th century and the building has been extensively refurbished. It features chequer brick with ashlar dressings and has a tile roof with brick end stacks. The building has a double-depth plan in a Georgian style, standing two storeys high with an attic and a symmetrical three-window range.
The exterior includes a stone-coped plinth, a stone platt band over the ground floor, and a coved cornice. The 20th-century round-headed entrance has a doorcase with fluted pilasters, entablatures, and a pedimental hood, along with a fanlight featuring radial glazing bars above a six-fielded-panel door. The windows have sills and brick flat arches above 16-pane sash windows, and there are three gabled dormers with casement windows. To the right, there is a 20th-century lean-to addition that replaced the original lean-to.
At the rear, the building has a gabled wing, a single-storey 20th-century wing, and a lean-to outshut, with some segmental-headed casement windows and skylights. The interior retains chamfered beams and curved roof trusses that suggest the original barrel-vaulted ceiling, as well as a forge that dates back to around 1798.
