Description
The detention block located north-east of the central block at H.M. Prison was built between 1852 and 1854, likely designed by Joseph Potter Jnr. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a T-plan and stands four storeys tall, with modillioned brick eaves. The windows to the cells have been altered at a later date. The returns of the building have a gabled center that includes tall four-light ashlar mullioned and double-transomed windows with cast-iron frames and arched hoods. Additionally, there are massive air shafts with panelled sides, and the rainwater heads are dated 1851.
