Description
No. 34 Gaolgate Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the mid-18th century and shows signs of an earlier structure. The building is made of stuccoed brick, with some remaining timber-framing visible in the central partition on the upper floors and the right end gable. It has an L-shaped plan and stands three storeys tall with a four-window range. The shopfront is from the 20th century. The upper floors feature pairs of widely separated sash windows, with altered 8/12-pane sashes on the first floor and 12-pane sashes on the second floor. Inside, the front rooms on the first floor have 18th-century plaster cornices, and there is an 18th-century staircase leading to the second floor and attic, which has turned balusters and a moulded handrail.
