Description

No. 18 Market Square is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates back to the 15th century and was refronted around 1700, with further alterations made in the 20th century and a refurbishment completed between 1986 and 1990. The building features a timber-frame structure with some re-used timber and a stucco facade, topped by a slate roof with a stucco end stack. It has an L-plan layout and stands three storeys high with an attic, presenting a symmetrical five-window range, with the central windows being blind. The top of the building is adorned with a modillioned wooden cornice. The shopfront, added in the 20th century, includes a recessed left end and an opening that returns to the side. The first and second floors have windows fitted with four-pane horned sashes, and there are two pedimented dormers with casement windows.

Inside, the first and second floors reveal exposed timber-framing, featuring storey-height panels with middle rails, braces, and a jowled head of wall post, along with some visible queen post trusses. The first floor includes a splat-baluster staircase with a square newel, one of which is inscribed with "WP/1791." The rear wing contains what appear to be two cusped wind braces that are either used as a door head or incorporated into the roof truss. The building is now part of a shopping centre.
