Description
6 and 7 Market Square is a shop built around 1800, constructed of brick with a slate roof and brick end stacks. It is designed in the Georgian style and has three storeys with a symmetrical two-window layout, featuring a two-storey lean-to wing at the left end. The top cornice is present, and the contemporary shopfront includes an entrance with an architrave and a decorative panel above, along with an overlight that has 'Catherine Wheel' glazing bars above a six-fielded-panel door. Flanking the entrance are small-paned bow windows supported by pilasters, with a frieze and entablature, and the cornice is extended on brackets over the entrance.
The upper floors feature tripartite sash windows with pilasters and entablatures; the first-floor windows have a configuration of four, sixteen, and four panes, while the second-floor windows have three, nine, and three panes. The lean-to wing has a door similar to the shopfront, and the first-floor window features an ashlar lintel above a twelve-pane horned sash. At the rear, there is a three-storey gabled wing and a longer two-storey gabled L-plan wing attached to the rear of The Chains Public House. This section has a tile roof and a modillioned brick cornice, with varied fenestration that includes a twelve-pane sash with thick glazing bars, casements with iron opening lights, and two bay windows.
