Description

No. 8 Market Square is a bank building dating from around 1810, with an addition from the 1890s. It features a combination of ashlar and brick with ashlar dressings, and has tiled roofs with brick end stacks. The building is designed in a Georgian style and has a double-depth plan.

The exterior consists of three storeys with a three-window range. There is a cornice over the ground floor, a second-floor sill band, and wide eaves. The ground floor has polished granite facing from the 1890s, with end piers that have brackets, and a left-end entrance featuring paired panelled doors. The windows are divided by Ionic pilasters, and this treatment continues to the addition. The first floor has large windows with 16-pane horned sashes, while the second floor features windows with 4/8-pane sashes.

The 1890s addition is in the Flemish Renaissance style, showcasing a curved corner entrance bay flanked by three-window gabled ranges. It has a first-floor cornice, a top cornice, and Dutch gables with flanking finials. The ground floor mirrors the earlier design. The first floor includes brick piers with festoon capitals that flank three-light transomed windows, which are adorned with cornices and elliptical tympana featuring banded voussoirs and rich ashlar relief panels, some of which display masks and scroll work. The second floor has similar three-light windows with leaded upper lights and top friezes, but the corner features a smaller three-light window with leaded glazing. Above the cornice is a rich ashlar relief panel with a mask and flanking beasts, along with a swept cornice topped by a heraldic lion finial. The gables include lunettes with banded voussoirs and leaded glazing, and pilasters supporting segmental pediments with rich relief work and embellished triangular panels.
