Description
4 and 5 Martin Street are two houses, now used as an office and restaurant, dating from around 1840. They are built of brick with ashlar dressings and feature a tile roof with brick end and cross-axial stacks. The exterior consists of three storeys with a two-plus-one window arrangement, a curved corner, and a single-window range facing St Martin's Place.
On the ground floor, there is a cornice with wide eaves and brick piers flanking the windows. The entrance is located at the left end, featuring a segmental arch with a key and an overlight above a panelled door. The ground floor has three and four windows, each with similar heads over 12-pane horned sashes and brick aprons beneath the sills. The first floor has windows with sills and fielded-panelled wedge lintels over 16-pane sashes, while the second floor features similar casement windows.
The corner entrance is adorned with baseless columns and flanking panelled pilasters, an entablature, and a blocked overlight above a door with two round-arched panels. Curved windows above this entrance have eared architraves, with a 12-pane sash on the first floor and a 6-pane sash on the second floor. The return side mirrors the main facade's details, with two windows on the ground floor and an 8-pane sash window on the second floor.
Inside, there is a staircase with a cut string and turned balusters. This building serves as an important focal point in the street.
