Description
Lloyds Bank is a bank building located in Stafford, dating from around 1795, with alterations and additions made around 1860. It was built for Stevenson, Salt and Co. The building has a double-depth plan and is designed in a classical style.
The exterior features three storeys with a two-window range and a three-window range that projects to the right. There is a wide sill band on the first floor and a deep cornice with modillions at the top. The ground floor on the right end has channelled rustication and rusticated quoins above. It includes round-headed windows, with two on the left having hollow-chamfered openings, one of which was originally an entrance. The two windows on the right end have rusticated voussoirs that are flush with the rustication and fielded-panelled aprons, with a similar entrance to the right. The windows are made of plate glass, some with etching.
On the first floor, the windows have eared architraves and 18-pane sashes, while the second floor features square windows with architraves and 6-pane sashes. There is a sill band on the right end inscribed with "OLD BANK." The building has two ashlar stacks with modillioned cornices. The right return has a three-window range with similar architectural details.
Inside, there are pilasters with large consoles supporting the beams. Historically, this building is significant as it is noted as the earliest branch of Lloyds Bank outside London. The bank was originally founded in 1737 and became incorporated into Lloyds Bank in 1866.
