Description

36 and 37 Gaolgate Street are houses that have been converted into shops. They date from the 17th century and were altered in the early 18th century. The buildings are constructed of stuccoed brick and timber-frame, topped with a tile roof, and have a double-depth plan in a Georgian style.

The exterior features 20th-century shopfronts on the ground floor, with the left shopfront extending to No. 35A and the right returning to Salter Street. There are platt bands between the floors and a top cornice with modillions, along with quoin strips. The first floor has sash windows, with three taller ones on the left that cut through the platt band, featuring 4-pane horned sashes, while the right side has two plate glass sashes. The second floor also has 4-pane horned sashes. There is a two-window return to Salter Street, and the rear of the building has two gabled wings.

Inside, there is a dragon beam and bresummers that survive above the ground floor ceiling. No. 36 includes a first-floor front room with panelling, some of which is early 17th century with moulded rails and stiles, and some is 18th century with square panels. It also features fluted and cabled pilasters with enriched heads, likely from the 17th century, and a plaster cornice. No. 37 has an open well stair with square newels and balusters that are either boarded in or have been removed.
