Description
The Former National Westminster Bank, located at No. 3 Market Square in Stafford, was built around 1900 and is designed in the Neo-classical Revival style. The building is constructed from Portland stone ashlar and features a pedimented roof with a right-angle plan.
The exterior consists of three storeys with a symmetrical three-window arrangement. The high ground floor showcases channeled rustication beneath an entablature adorned with festoons at the entrance level, with quoins above and a top cornice. A tetrastyle Corinthian portico is applied to the first and second floors, with a parapet behind that includes two urns. The entrance is set within a round-headed recess, featuring an architrave that ends in scrolls flanking the key, and has paired fielded-panel doors. The entablature above the entrance projects forward over attached columns inspired by those of the Tower of the Winds and is topped with two bronze urns. The large fanlight above the doors is fitted with metal glazing bars and a console key.
The ground floor windows are designed with apron panels and flanking consoles, featuring moulded sills and architraves topped with consoled cornices over 12-pane sash windows. The first-floor windows have architraves, friezes, and consoled cornices over 6/9-pane sash windows, with a central segmental pediment. The second floor includes square windows with small-paned casements and a small round window in the pediment.
Inside, the banking hall has a simple Neo-classical treatment.
