Description
The detention block south of the central block at H.M. Prison was built around 1840 by Joseph Potter Jnr. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a T-plan and is three stories high, with a symmetrical design. It has modillioned brick eaves and a central entrance. Above the entrance, there are tall three-light pointed windows with moulded arches and cast-iron casements, though the windows in the cells have been altered at a later date. The block includes massive air shafts with panelled sides and a central octagonal lantern fitted with cast-iron lights.
