Description
H.M. Prison, Central Block is a prison built between 1787 and 1793, with later alterations to its wings. It was designed by either Thomas Cook or William Blackburn. The building is made of brick with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. It stands three storeys high and has a symmetrical layout, with the centre projecting forward to form the former Governor's house. The facade includes five ashlar bands and a top coped parapet. The central entrance is flanked by a plain ashlar porch. The centre of the building features a Venetian window, with round-headed windows on either side. The windows are surrounded by rusticated ashlar and have contemporary iron grilles.
