Description
No. 54 Pall Mall is an office building constructed between 1890 and 1891 by Karslake and Mortimer. It features an ashlar stone facade and a slate roof, rising four storeys with a gabled attic. The building is three windows wide. The ground floor includes a shallow portico with two unequal bays, which houses an arched shop front and an entrance door. This is supported by rusticated Ionic columns on pedestals and an entablature with a pulvinated frieze, topped by a colonetted balustrade that encloses a shallow balcony for the first-floor windows.
The upper floors are accentuated by channelled pilaster strips. The first-floor windows are framed by Gibbs surrounds with prominent keystones, while the second-floor sashes have eared architraves and the second-floor windows have moulded architraves. Above the third floor, there is a frieze with relief carving, a bracketed cornice, and a steep pedimented gable that contains an ornately designed Venetian attic window. There is a blind attic space behind the gable. Stone balconies with iron balustrades, supported by massive brackets, extend across the second and third floors, and the balcony for the attic window is formed by a bowed projection of the cornice, carried on a central stone bracket.
