Description
TQ 2980 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER PALL MALL SW1 81/51 (North side) No 54 - II Office building. 1890-91 by Karslake and Mortimer. Ashlar faced, slate roof. 4 storeys and gabled attic. 3 windows wide. Ground floor has a shallow portico of 2 unequal bays containing arched shop front and entrance door; rusticated pedestalled Ionic columns and entablature with pulvinated frieze surmounted by a colonetted balustrade enclosing shallow balcony to the 1st floor windows. The upper floors are flanked by channelled pilaster strips. The 1st floor windows are contained in Gibbs surrounds with prominent keystones; eared architraves to 2nd floor sashes and moulded architraves to 2nd floor. Above 3rd floor a frieze with relief carving, bracketed cornice and then a steep pedimented gable containing ornately composed Venetian attic window. Blind attic behind gable. Stone balconies, with iron balustrades on massive brackets across 2nd and 3rd floors; balcony to attic window formed by bowed projection of cornice carried on central stone bracket.
