Description

TQ 2980 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER PALL MALL, SW1 82/34 20.6.73 Nos, 121 to 123(consec.) G.V. II Office block originally with ground floor shops. 1880-82 by Alexander Peebles. Portland stone, slate roof. Eclectic Classicism with florid Renaissance detailing. 4 storeys including attic storey. 5 windows wide grouped as 3 major bays in rhythm 2:1:2. Ground floor has large central porch with pedestalled pairs of Doric columns and pediment, the former shop windows either side, altered for bank mid C.20, flanked by rusticated pilasters. The 2 main upper floors have architraved windows with aediculed Composite order frames and balustraded pedestals on 1st floor, and are articulated by giant Composite order with fluted engaged columns flanking centre and panelled pilasters each end, the shafts and frieze of entablature profusely carved with grotesque ornament; attic storey with squat, panelled, Ionic pilasters, entablature and balustraded parapet.
