Description
No. 125 Pall Mall is an office block built between 1912 and 1913 by architects H.R. Houchin and Frank Smee. The building is constructed from Portland stone and features a copper dome. It showcases an eclectic Baroque style, prominently positioned to close the vista of Haymarket. The structure has five storeys, including a podium ground floor with a mezzanine, three main storeys, and two tiers of attics beneath the dome.
The facade is two windows wide, with one major bay aligned with Pall Mall and a narrow bay angled towards Cockspur Street. The ground and mezzanine levels have a rusticated framework, although the mid-20th century bank frontage has been altered. The major bay features deeply recessed bronzed casement windows across the three upper storeys, framed by a channelled wall face. An entablature with a prominent modillion cornice and parapet sits above.
The dome rises above the building, featuring two tiers of attic windows in the drum, flanked by scrolled voluted buttresses and an enriched cresting cornice. The copper dome is topped with a finial that includes an openwork globe crowned by a weathervane shaped like a ship. Tall corniced chimney stacks are located at either end of the building.
