Description
No. 4 Haymarket is a terrace house and shop built around 1822-1823, part of John Nash's Suffolk Place and Suffolk Street development, although constructed by Mr. Price and differing from the design of No. 3 Haymarket. The building features stucco and a slate roof, with Soanic incised detailing. It stands three storeys high with a dormered mansard and is one window wide. The ground floor has a pilastered shop front, with an entablature-fascia that extends from No. 3, and a mid-20th century display window. The first and second floors are flanked by incised Greek fret pilaster strips, featuring a tripartite glazing bar sash window on the first floor (originally with a pediment) and a recessed glazing bar sash window on the second floor. The cornice aligns with that of No. 3, and there is a parapet with coping. A cast iron geometric pattern balcony on the first floor continues the design from No. 3. Originally, No. 4 was balanced by a similar building on the south side of Nash's Suffolk Place, which has since been demolished. This building is significant as part of the Suffolk Place - Suffolk Street development and, alongside the Strand "pepper pots," is one of the few remaining examples that reflect the original character of Nash's Regent Street.
