Description

TQ 2980 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER HAYMARKET, SWl 82/18 14.1.70 No. 4 G.V. II* Terrace house and shop. c.1822-23, part of Nash's Suffolk Place, Suffolk Street development, but built by Mr. Price and not conforming to the No. 3 Haymarket design. Stucco, slate roof. Soanic incised detail. 3 storeys and dormered mansard. 1 window wide. Ground floor has pilastered shop front, the entablature-fascia carried over from No. 3, mid C.20 display window. 1st and 2nd floors flanked by incised Greek fret pilaster strips with 1st floor tripartite glazing bar sash window (originally pedimented) and 2nd floor recessed glazing bar sash window. Cornice in line with that of No. 3, parapet with coping. 1st floor cast iron geometric pattern balcony continuing that of No. 3. No. 4 was originally balanced by a similar front flanking the south side of Nash's Suffolk Place, since demolished. Important as part of Suffolk Place - Suffolk Street development, apart from the Strand "pepper pots" the only surviving fragment representing the original character of Nash's Regent Street.
