Description
Nos 8, 9, and 11 Suffolk Street are terraced houses built around 1822-23 by John Nash. They are constructed of stucco with slate roofs and rise three storeys plus an attic, with basements. Each house is two windows wide. The ground floor features channelled work with semicircular arched doorways on the left. The channelling is shaped to the arches, and the recessed doors have two fielded panels and two flush panels, along with fanlights; No 11 has a fanlight with a looped pattern. The windows are recessed tripartite glazing bar sashes.
On the first and second floors, the windows have architraves, with the first-floor windows flanked by panelled strips and topped with consoled pediments, while the second-floor windows have cornices. The attic storey has square windows set back for one order. A stucco course creates a balcony across the first floor, featuring fine geometric Greek detail in the ironwork. There is a mutule cornice above the second floor and a crowning cornice with a blocking course at the attic, which aligns with that of Nos 6½ and 7. The area railings are made of cast iron and topped with urn finials. This building is an important example of Nash's street architecture in the Regent Street style and reflects his significant investment in the development.
