Description

TQ 2980 NE CITY OF WESTMINSTER SUFFOLK STREET, SW1 71/101 Nos 8, 9 and 11 5.2.70 G.V. II* Terraced houses. c1822-23 by John Nash. Stucco, slate roofs. 3 storeys and attic storey, with basements. Each 2 windows wide. Channelled ground floor with semicircular arched doorways set to left, the channelling struck to arches, recessed doors of 2 fielded and 2 flush panels and fanlights, that of No 11 retaining looped fan pattern; recessed tripartite glazing bar sashes. 1st and 2nd floors have architraved glazing bar sashes, those on 1st floor with panelled flanking strips and consoled pediments, those on 2nd floor with cornices. Attic storey has square windows recessed for one order. Stucco course - balcony across 1st floor with fine geometric Greek detail to ironwork. Mutule cornice over 2nd floor and crowning cornice and blocking course to attic lined through with that of Nos 6½ and 7. Cast iron urn finialed area railings. Important survival of Nash's street architecture in the Regent Street manner in a development which he invested in heavily himself. Survey of London. Vol XX. John Nash; John Summerson.
