Description

Nos 83 to 85 Pall Mall is an office building that serves as an extension to the Royal Automobile Club, built between 1911 and 1915 by architects Henry Metcalf and Thomas R. Greig. The building features a stone facade and a slate roof, showcasing a monumental yet restrained classical design with some Beaux Arts elements. It stands five storeys tall with a basement and has a symmetrical front with nine bays. The ground and first floors are channelled and appear as a single basement storey. Doorways are located in the first, fifth, and ninth bays, each adorned with architraves, pulvinated friezes, and cornices, which are linked to segmental arched windows above that have triple keystones. The upper floors feature architrave surrounds, with cornices on the second floor and tablets on the third floor. Windows aligned with the doorways are vertically linked by a single architrave to the second and third floors, enhanced with enriched aprons and prominent open segmental pediments supported by console corbels above the third floor. The frieze of the crowning entablature is interrupted by the heads of the fourth-floor windows, and there is a dentilled bed leading to a modillion cornice and a balustraded parapet. The horizontal lines of the facade align with those of the adjacent Royal Automobile Club facade. This building is included for its group interest with the Royal Automobile Club designed by Mewes and Davis.
