Description
The Oxford and Cambridge University Club is a gentlemen's club built between 1836 and 1837 by architects Sir Robert Smirke and his brother Sidney Smirke. It features a stucco exterior with a rusticated ground floor and channelled first floor, topped by a slate roof. This building is notable as the last club constructed in the Greek Revival style.
It has two storeys, a basement, and a dormered attic, with a façade that is seven windows wide. The central entrance is marked by a Corinthian portico with a flight of steps leading up to it. The ground floor showcases rustication that is shaped into semicircular arches above glazing bar sash windows, connected by an impost string. Above this, an enriched cornice is located beneath a stucco balcony supported by coupled decorated console-brackets, with cast iron balustrading in between.
On the first floor, the glazing bar sash windows are recessed and framed by pilaster jambs and entablatures, which are set in panels that extend upwards to feature figured reliefs in the antique style, designed by W. G. Nicholl based on designs by the architect's father, Robert Smirke. The main entablature includes an anthemion frieze, a dentil string, and a modillion cornice, topped with a balustraded parapet. The interior reflects the Greek Revival style, except for the staircase, which was ornately remodeled with marble facings by Reginald Blomfield between 1906 and 1912.
