Description

This office building at 67 and 68 Pall Mall dates from 1928 to 1930 and was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Constructed of Portland stone with a slate roof, it presents a free classical design with three exposed elevations. The building is five storeys high, incorporating a two-storey attic with pedimented gable ends. It features four bays. A tall ground floor is distinguished by a Doric order and two columns in antis to both the street front and the west return. A close set range of windows occupies the first floor/mezzanine level. The second floor displays architraved windows with segmental heads and sills within a banded shallow rustication. The third and fourth floors have plainly pierced windows topped with keys rising to plat bands. A plain coved cornice is followed by an iron balustrade, above which are the attic storeys with plain windows alternating with through-storey semi-circular arched windows. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the building and forms the base to the pediments of the gable ends. The pedimented attic storeys are designed to resemble a roof pavilion.
