Description

Marlborough Gate is a pair of pedestrian and carriage gates dating from around 1828. They are made of cast iron and feature open work square section piers, which are composed of tasselled halberd-finialed rails and cross bars. These piers are topped with large lanterns supported by scrolls, designed in a modified Windsor pattern. The gates themselves have spear head rails and dog rails. They connect St James's Palace and Marlborough House, closing access to Marlborough Road from Pall Mall. The design of these gates is consistent with those that close Stable Yard Road, as part of the St. James's Palace precinct.
