Description
No 3 St James's Street is a former pair of terrace houses, dating from around 1731-32, which were altered around 1800 to function as a single premises with a shop. The building is constructed of brown brick and features a slate roof. It stands three storeys high with a dormered mansard and has six windows across its front. The ground floor is dominated by a timber shop front from around 1800, which includes arcaded windows and a doorway, panelled risers, glazing bars, and original shutters. To the left, there is a passageway that provides access to Pickering Place, revealing the timber framing of the flank walls and featuring a side entrance with an architraved doorway and a cornice hood. The upper floors have recessed glazing bar sash windows that are set under gauged red brick flat arches, with red brick dressings. The flanks of the building are also made of red brick, and there is a red brick cornice below the parapet. A cast iron balcony spans the first floor. The interior of the shop retains its original shelving and fittings.
