Description
Lock's of St James's is a terrace house with a shop front, dating from the late 17th century. It was refronted in the mid 18th century and features a late 18th-century shop front. The building is constructed of brown brick and has a tiled roof, standing three storeys tall with a dormered mansard. It is two windows wide.
The ground floor showcases a well-preserved late 18th-century shop front with two entrances beneath an entablature. The shop door has a reeded frame, and the fascia is lined with reeded detailing. The shop windows, which flank a panelled and glazed door, retain their original thick glazing bars and are slightly advanced, with one pane deep returns.
On the upper floors, there are flush framed sash windows with thick glazing bars and bowed out linings, all set under flat gauged arches. A wrought iron balcony is present on the first floor, and the building features a parapet with coping. The original shop interior, which includes fittings that are largely intact, is notable as it houses one of the oldest hatters in London, having supplied notable figures such as Lord Nelson.
