Description

No. 10 St. James's Street, which includes Nos. 20 and 21 King Street, was originally built as the St. James's Bazaar in 1832 by Sir James Pennethorne. This neo-classical building has undergone alterations in 1897, which included heightening, and in 1914. It is a large corner block, finished in stucco with a slate roof, standing four storeys tall with dormered attics. The façade features three windows facing St. James's Street and a long return of nine windows on King Street. The ground floor is rusticated with quoins, and there is a central Greek Doric porch on St. James's Street, which has a canted bay above, added in 1881, complete with a bracketed cornice. The windows are recessed glazing bar sash windows, with semicircular arched windows on the first floor that have balustrades. Moulded strings separate the floors, and there is a main dentil and bracket cornice with a pediment across the third floor. Above this, there is a cornice and blocking course with iron railings leading to the attic storey. The cornice and strings continue around to the King Street elevation, which features a broad Tuscan portico with a balustraded parapet. The first floor windows are arcaded with pilaster jambs, some of which are blind, and there is a cast iron patterned balcony railing across the first floor. The attic storey has pairs of semi-circular arched architraved windows with cast iron balconettes.
