Description
No 12 St James's Square is a terraced town house built in 1836, attributed to Thomas Cubitt. The building features a stuccoed brick exterior with a slate roof and showcases an Italianate facade. It stands four storeys tall, with a basement and attic, and has a broad front that is three windows wide. The ground floor is rusticated and includes an arcaded design with a Doric columned porch to the right. The semicircular arched windows on the ground floor have rustication struck to their arches.
The upper floor windows are adorned with architraves, with those on the first floor featuring consoled dentil pediments. The third floor windows are positioned between console brackets that support a boldly modelled cornice with a blocking course. The upper floors also display chamfered quoins. An entablature of the porch extends across the ground floor, supported by scrolled console brackets that hold a balustraded balcony. A guilloche moulded plat band is present on the second floor, and cast iron area railings complete the exterior.
Inside, the interior boasts Grecian detailing, particularly well-preserved in the staircase, which is later overlaid with Rococo decor from the 19th century. The ground floor features a top-lit enfilade of rooms beyond the staircase hall, along with a fine reset mid-18th century chimney piece.
