Description
No 18 St James's Square is a town house located on a corner site, originally built in 1725 and later refaced and altered in 1846 by architects Elger and Kelk. The building features a stucco-faced brick exterior and a slate roof, showcasing an ornate Italianate design. It stands four storeys tall with a basement and is four windows wide, with a three-window return to King Street that includes a central entrance.
The ground floor is rusticated, with windows that have vermiculated rustication and a vermiculated impost band connecting bearded head keystones. The first-floor windows are adorned with balustraded balconies and architraves, while the second floor has similarly balconied windows that feature eared enriched architraves and segmental pediments. At the top, small square attic floor windows are set within a decorated frieze beneath a prominent crowning cornice. Each floor is separated by cornices, and rusticated quoining adds to the design.
On the King Street return, there is a slightly advanced broad central bay with a large applied portico supported by clustered Doric columns. A Venetian window is located on the first floor behind a balustraded balcony over the portico, and the fenestration is similar to that on the front facing the square. The design of No 18 is integrated with the adjacent terrace at Nos 1A, 1B, and 1C King Street, which were also designed by the same architects.
