Description

The building at 2 and 3 Duke Street, St James's, is an office and gallery building constructed between 1910 and 1912, designed by E. Vincent Harris and Thomas A. Moodie. It is a small-scale example of a "Roman" style, built primarily of red brick with stone dressings, and has a concealed roof. The building’s design is unusual, combining Roman Renaissance elements with a mannerist approach to the proportion and detail.

The building is three storeys high and three windows wide. The ground floor features a banded stone arcade with a semicircular arched opening, which now contains a shop front set back within. The first floor, designated the piano nobile, has windows set within pediments and framed by stone balustraded balconettes. The square openings on the second floor are recessed. A deep, enriched stone cornice is topped by a balustraded parapet.
