Description
The East India Sports Club is a club premises built in 1865 by Charles Lee, likely incorporating elements from 18th century and early 19th century houses that were previously on the site. The building features a stucco façade and a slate roof, presenting a symmetrical palazzo front. It is three stories tall, with a basement and attics, and is seven windows wide, including a two-story canted bay on the left side.
The central entrance is framed by a heavy arched corniced porch. The ground floor has semicircular arched sash windows, which are framed by panelled pilasters and heavy keyed archivolts, with panelled aprons and an impost string; the bay window also includes archivolt lights. On the first floor, flat arched windows are set within round arched architraves, flanked by Corinthian pilasters that support pediments. The top floor windows feature eared architraves and cornices, separated by large sunk panels.
Additional architectural details include a stucco area balustrade and a balustraded first floor balcony, a string cornice on the second floor, and a main entablature with a decorated frieze and a pierced parapet above. The interior is decorated in a heavy style typical of other clubhouses.
