Description

TQ 2980 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER ST. JAMES ' S SQUARE SWl 81/99 No 14 (London Library) GV II Library. 1896-98 by J. Osborne Smith. Portland stone front, slate roof. A slightly eclectic design with ample fenestration clearly expressing function. 3 tall storeys and basement. Ground floor has semicircular arched doorway to left and 2 stone mullioned- transomed Jacobethan windows. 1st floor has 3 "Georgian" sash windows in architraves, the central one tripartite and pedimented, set in semicircular arched recess. 3 tall Jacobethan windows to top floor with arched heads to lights. The front finished off with a pediment. Well-lit original library interior with extensions of 1921-23 and a bookstore of 1932-34 by Mews and Davis. The Prevost Room has a fine chimneypice by Robert Adam from Shelburne, later Lansdowne, House, Berkeley Square. Survey of London; vol XXIX
