Description
No. 11 Duke Street is a terraced house with a later shop, dating from the early 18th century and altered over time. It is constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings and features a tiled double-pitched roof with dormers and a slate mansard extension at the front, which retains mostly original roof timbers. The building has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with two windows on the front. The shop front, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, includes a plate glass window with colonettes at the corners and three horizontal top lights, along with a fascia that has a projecting cornice. There is a recessed entrance with an overlight. The first-floor windows have gauged red brick flat arches and a cast iron balcony, while the second-floor windows feature cambered arch heads, all fitted with late 20th-century glazing.
At the rear, the building retains some original fabric of the closet wing. Internally, most of the original form remains. The ground floor has been altered, with a hall that is panelled from the late 19th or early 20th century, but from the first floor upwards, there is early 18th-century panelling and a dado in the stairwell, with the stair likely dating from the later 18th century. The first floor has been mostly altered, but a panelled stair partition wall and the rear wall remain. The second floor contains well-preserved, complete panelled rooms with cornices and original doors featuring H and HL hinges. The attic includes a moulded dado rail and cornice.
