Description

The Eccentric Club is a building located on Ryder Street in the City of Westminster. It was originally constructed as chambers, opened as a hotel, and is now used as a club. Built in 1864 by John Norton, the structure features red brick with blue brick and tile decorations, along with terracotta trim. It showcases an unusual brick "Lombard" Romanesque-Gothic style typical for the West End. The building stands four storeys tall and is six bays wide, with the eastern end being an extension added in 1900 that matches the original style.

The façade includes two windows and a doorway with round arches supported by granite columns. To the right, there is a broad segmental arched entrance to the club, which has a canopy added around 1900, and to the left, a carriage arch with shafted jambs. The first and second floors feature semicircular arched windows, with blue bricks forming patterns on the impost bands, arches, and spandrels. The third attic floor has small pairs of round arched windows, also with shafted jambs and terracotta imposts.

A heavy quatrefoil pierced painted terracotta balcony spans the first floor, while individual balconies with similar piercings are supported on heavy brackets on the second floor. Narrow bands of coloured tiles run between the storeys, and the top floor is accentuated with a "pedestal" of diapering, topped by a corbelled cornice below the parapet. The carriageway has historically provided access to the rear of Christie's King Street Auction Rooms.
