Description
Boodle's Club is a gentlemen's club located at 28 St. James's Street in the City of Westminster. It was built between 1775 and 1776 by architect J. Crunden for the Savoir Vivre Club, with alterations made by J. B. Papworth between 1821 and 1824. The building features a brown brick exterior with a stuccoed ground floor and a slate roof, exhibiting characteristics similar to the Adam style.
The structure has a three-storey central section with a pediment, flanked by two four-storey single-bay wings and a basement. Each wing has Tuscan porches, with the left porch serving as the entrance. The ground floor of the central section includes a bow window with glazing bar sash lights, added by Papworth, and is flanked by additional glazing bar sashes. Above this, a large central Venetian window fills the first floor, framed by a semicircular arch and decorated with an Adam-style stucco fan. The sash lights of the Venetian window are separated by Ionic columns. The wings feature recessed glazing bar sashes beneath flat gauged arches, set within through storey panels. There are plat bands on the first and second floors, a cornice above the second floor, and small cornices below the parapets of the wings. Cast iron balconies are present over the porches, at the Venetian window, and above the second-floor windows of the wings. The central area is enclosed by cast iron railings.
Inside, there is a relatively small staircase with a wrought iron balustrade located behind the hall. The two principal ground floor rooms, aligned behind the bow window, were decorated by Papworth. The grand first-floor room, designed in the Adam style, features decorated panelled pilasters and columns.
