Description
Number 9 St James's Square is an end-of-terrace town house built in 1736 by Henry Flitcroft, with Benjamin Timbrell as the builder and promoter. The building is made of brown brick and has a slate roof, standing four storeys tall with a basement and three windows across its facade. The entrance is located on Duke of York Street, featuring recessed sash windows with glazing bars set under flat gauged brick arches. There is a plat band at the first floor and a stone cornice above the second floor, with a parapet that has coping.
The building has a three-storey return to Duke of York Street, which includes an arched doorway and a canted open Doric porch that supports a first-floor bay window with three sash lights. An oriel bay window was added to the right side on the first floor in 1906. Wrought iron area railings are present, and number 9 was constructed to a uniform design that includes the railings shared with numbers 10 and 11.
Inside, the fine interior is best preserved on the ground floor, featuring panelling and cornices. An Ionic columned hall leads to a stair compartment that was originally top lit. The staircase has architrave closed strings, turned balusters, and mahogany newels, with oak treads leading to the first floor. The walls display framed decorative stucco work panels at the first-floor level and on the second floor's former gallery. The first-floor rooms retain their cornices and other decorative features.
