Description
No 7 St James's Square is a terraced town house built between 1911 and 1912 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The building features brown brick and a slate roof, showcasing a very restrained neo-Georgian style. It stands four storeys tall, with a basement and a dormered mansard, and is five windows wide. To the left, there is a stone porch with Ionic columns and an open pediment. The windows are flush framed glazing bar sash types, set under flat gauged brick arches with stone keys. There are stone plat bands and sill bands on the first and second floors, along with a moulded stone cornice and parapet that includes sections of balustrading in front of the dormers. The property is enclosed by cast iron area railings.
Inside, the layout is roughly H-shaped, with the middle wing lit on each side. The decoration is primarily of late 17th century character, featuring restrained designs and some original elements, including chimneypieces from the early 18th century house. Notable interior spaces include the staircase, inner hall, dining room, and a vast barrel vaulted library.
