Description

6, Belvedere is a terrace house, now a shop with accommodation above, believed to date from around 1774, with additions made in the mid-19th century. The front is constructed of limestone ashlar, now painted, with ashlar to the rear. It has a double-pile, parapeted roof covered with artificial slate, with two ashlar stacks to the left. The house is situated at an angle to the street and narrows towards the rear.

The front of the building has three storeys and a basement. The first floor has a margin-light sash window set in a splayed reveal, and the second floor has a similar sash window with a stone sill, also in a splayed reveal. A mid-19th-century shop front projects over the basement area. This features a two-light window to the front, with timber mullions and a transom, and single-light windows to the sides. A recessed, half-glazed door is to the right, above which is a basket-headed arched overlight, with a three-pane window acting as a screen to the right, also with a basket head and carved spandrels. The surround includes panelled pilasters to the left and right, topped with heavy, carved console brackets supporting an enriched and moulded frieze and cornice. A wrought iron screen forms a stall riser, allowing light to a two-pane sash window in a plain reveal to the basement. The building has a coved eaves cornice and a coped parapet, with a lead hopperhead and downpipe on the right. The rear elevation contains two-pane, horned sash windows, a 20th-century window, and a door to the ground floor. The interior has not been inspected.
