Description

Schomberg House is a Grade II* town mansion built in 1698 for the Duke of Schomberg, with later alterations and additions. The building features a brown brick exterior with red brick dressings and stone quoining, topped by a slate roof. It stands four storeys high with a basement and is nine bays wide. The central three bays are slightly advanced and topped with a pediment, while there are projecting single bay flanking wings. The eastern left half of the elevation was rebuilt in the 1960s to restore the original symmetry of the design.

A central projecting caryatid porch made of painted Coade stone, dated 1791, is present, although there is no doorway behind it. The entrance is located at the foot of the west wing, which is adorned with Ionic columns and a bracketed cornice. The long, narrow, renewed glazing bar sash windows are flush framed and feature flat gauged red brick arches, keystones, and red brick dressings. The centre bay has vertical "lacing". The coved eaves cornice and pediment are supported by carved modillion brackets. On the first floor, there is a Coade stone tablet depicting an allegory of Painting. Additionally, a plaque on the west wing commemorates the residence of the painter Thomas Gainsborough. Schomberg House is a rare surviving example of a 17th-century town mansion.
