Description
No. 1 Carlton Gardens is one of a pair of large town houses built around 1828 by John Nash with (Sir) James Pennethorne. The building is made of stucco and has slate roofs, forming part of the southern end of Nash's Via Triumphalis. It features three storeys, an attic storey, a basement, and a dormered mansard roof. The facade is five windows wide, with a full-height bow on the north corner to the right of the front. The north return has five windows, with the west end bays advanced. There is a large enclosed Ionic column porch in the advanced part of the north return. The windows are recessed glazing bar sash windows, with those on the ground, first, and second floors featuring cornices on consoles. A plat band is present at the second floor, along with a moulded cornice and a balustraded parapet. The property is enclosed by cast iron spearhead area railings.
