Description
No. 2 Carlton Gardens is one of a pair of large town houses built around 1828 by John Nash in collaboration with Sir James Pennethorne. The house is constructed of stucco and features a slate roof. It is located at the southern end of Nash's Via Triumphalis, raised on a terrace with its south front facing the Mall. The building has three tall storeys, a basement, and a dormered mansard roof. It is five windows wide, with a six-window south front that includes a central full-height bow.
To the right, there is a portico-porch supported by two pairs of Ionic columns and topped with a balustraded parapet. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes, with those on the ground and second floors featuring cornices on consoles, while the first-floor windows have pediments on consoles. The first floor has a pseudo parapet with blind balustrading below the window sills, and a sill band on the second floor. The building is finished with a moulded cornice and a balustraded parapet.
The return front has similar window arrangements, including a bow, but the first-floor parapet is fully developed into a balustraded balcony on shallow console brackets. The area is enclosed by cast iron spearhead railings. Notably, No. 2 served as the London residence of Lord Kitchener during his time as Secretary of State for War from 1914 until his death in 1916, as indicated by a plaque from the London County Council.
