27.6.75 Nos 135 to 137 consecutive GV II

Commercial premses 1876-77 by W I Sams. Stone faced early C20 ground floor and stuccoed upper floors, slate roof. Five storeys, 3 bays wide. Early C20 shop windows to ground floor in stone pilaster and entablature frame with central doorway flanked by fluted Ionic columns supporting a broken segmental pediment. Upper, floors have banded rustication and a strong vertical emphasis achieved by the use of Ionic pilasters and columns to divide the windows each into 3 sashed lights. Blind balcony at second floor level; enriched plat band to third floor; boldly decorated frieze carrying segmental pediments beneath the balustrade and the fancifully ornamental dormers of the attic storey. The hall at the rear of the premises is not of special interest.
