Description
The Fine Art Society is a gallery located at 148 New Bond Street in the City of Westminster. It was built in 1876 by architect E W Godwin and is designed in a Transitional Gothic - Free style using Portland stone. The building has a narrow frontage and stands five storeys tall, topped with a gable. The ground floor features deeply recessed gallery windows and a doorway framed by columns in antis. The first floor is also recessed and includes a segmental arched window, with sculpted figures of two children holding a shield on the left side.
Inside, it is one of the few late 19th-century purpose-designed galleries that has survived, retaining its top light rear exhibition space along with a balustraded well leading down to the basement showroom.
