Description
No. 30 Bruton Street is a terrace house built in the 1770s, which remains largely intact behind a 1930s rendered "moderne" facade. The building has four storeys and is three windows wide, with original openings preserved above the ground floor shop front. Inside, there is a vestibule that leads to a top-lit stairwell featuring an open arcade at the top floor landing. The open string stone stairs are complemented by a wrought iron lyre scroll balustrade.
The ground floor gallery has a Roman Ionic column screen separating the front and back areas, which is likely from the early 20th century but may be original, and it retains a modillion cornice. The first-floor drawing room is divided from the rear room by sliding panelled doors, and both rooms feature modillion cornices. The original mahogany doors and their fittings are housed in architrave cases. The rear room includes a carved wood chimneypiece with console terms, putti, and a Rococo frieze, while the front room boasts an ornately carved Rococo architrave chimneypiece, possibly reset around 1900. All windows in the building retain panelled shutters.
