Description
26 Bruton Street is a terrace house built in the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the 1930s by architect Gerald Lacoste for the couturier Norman Hartnell's showrooms. The building features painted brick and a slate roof, and is three windows wide. The ground floor includes a display window from 1934 framed in polished granite, along with a similarly framed doorway to the left, flanked by a pair of marble obelisks. The upper floors have 1934 sash windows set under flat gauged arches, with bowed wrought iron balconettes also from 1934. A stone cornice is located at the third floor level, topped by a parapet with a blocking course.
The interior was redecorated in 1934 on the ground and first floors for Norman Hartnell by Lacoste, while still retaining an 18th-century cut string staircase with carved tread ends and a lyre and anthemion wrought iron balustrade. The ground floor showroom has been altered, but the front door and the door to the hall are made of chromed steel and glass, with lobby fittings designed by Lacoste. The half landing features decor of marble half-columns capped by urns flanking a mirror-glazed door, and the first floor showroom is completely mirror-glazed, equipped with vanity tables, a moulded glass chimney piece, and original purpose-designed light fittings, with the glass specially produced by Pilkington's. The 1934 rear wing includes fitting rooms that retain original light fittings, and one room in the original part of the rear wing has mid-18th century Rococo plasterwork on the ceiling. The Lacoste interiors are considered a rare survival.
