Description

Nos. 23 and 23A Brutton Street are a mid- to late 18th-century terrace house, with alterations from the 19th century. The exterior is stucco-faced with a slate roof. The house has five storeys, with the top floor being a rebuild of the original mansard attic. It has three bays plus one, the right-hand bay slightly recessed. An original bracketed cornice is visible at third-floor level. Mid-20th-century shops occupy the ground floor. The windows are sash windows with no glazing bars, and the first-floor windows have architraves with bracketed pediments. The interior retains an open string stone staircase with a wrought iron balustrade. The front drawing room on the first floor features a carved wood chimney piece, an enriched plaster ceiling (with a cartouche likely dating to around 1900), C18 doors and doorcases, a statuary marble chimney piece, and a carved wood chimney piece, which is probably a reset to a rear first-floor room.
