Description
Nos 170 to 174 on New Bond Street is a terrace row with shops, built around 1850 to 1860. The buildings are finished in stucco and topped with slate roofs, showcasing bold Italianate detailing. They rise four storeys, capped by a heavy modillion cornice and a balustraded parapet in front of dormered mansards. Each front features three windows grouped as a tripartite bay. The ground floor shop fronts, which are under a continuous entablature, were altered in the mid to later 20th century. Engaged Ionic columns flank and separate the first floor sash windows, which have an entablature above. The second floor windows are set in architrave surrounds, with a segmental pediment over the centre window and a pierced balustrade embracing all three. This row is included for its group interest as a lively example of Italianate commercial design.
