Description
This building, located at 23 Albemarle Street and 16A, 16B, and 16C Grafton Street, is a purpose-built shop and chamber complex dating from 1896. It is constructed of hard red brick and terracotta, showcasing a Jacobean style with some Art Nouveau Renaissance detailing. The prominent five-storey corner block features five windows facing Albemarle Street and a corner turret, along with five windows on Grafton Street. The ground floor has an arched treatment for the shops, with windows that project in part as rectangular bays topped with glazed half barrel vaults. There are two three-storey segmental and canted oriel bays on Albemarle Street, while the corner turret is corbelled and topped with a lead dome. Grafton Street also has similar oriels, although one is only two storeys high. Above the doorway on Albemarle Street, there is a shallow relief Art Nouveau terracotta panel. The columns of the corner turret are decorated with more conventional Renaissance motifs on their shafts.
