Description
No 16 Grafton Street is a terrace house built around 1770-1780, likely designed by Sir Robert Taylor, and altered around 1840. The building is four storeys high with a basement and is finished in stucco. It features a broad front with four windows. A main dentil cornice is located above the second floor, and there is a parapet cornice above the third floor. The windows are set in broad surrounds that are vermiculated, with cornices on the ground floor.
The large doorway is framed in an architrave with a studded door, and fluted brackets support a first-floor balcony that has a heavy cast iron balustrade with an ornamented X pattern. The first-floor windows have cornices on consoles that support cast iron window guards for the second-floor windows. There are heavy cast iron railings on a dwarf wall, leading to the area between stucco dies, which return up the steps to the doorway. The flanking pedestals are topped with cast iron lamp standards.
Although the interior has undergone significant changes since it became part of Asprey's premises, it still retains the original staircase typical of Taylor's design. This staircase features an apsed end well that rises to an oval lantern with waterleaf trim and a fluted frieze, transitioning into a barrel vault over the apse with guilloche moulding. The stone stairs have a cut string and moulded soffit, with scrolled wrought iron balusters and a moulded handrail that is scrolled out at the foot. The house was built as part of Sir Robert Taylor's development of Grafton Street.
