TQ 2880 NE, 2980 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER GRAFTON STREET W1 69/74 and 70/7 No 16 - II Terrace house. c.1770-80 probably by Sir Robert Taylor, altered c.1840. Stuccoed 4 storeys with basement. Four windows, broad front. Main dentil cornice above second floor; parapet cornice above third floor. Windows in broad surrounds, vermiculated with cornices on ground floor. Large doorway in architrave frame, studded door, and fluted brackets rising to first floor balcony with heavy cast iron ornamented x pattern balustrade. First floor windows with cornices on consoles supporting cast iron window guards to second floor windows. Heavy cast iron railings on dwarf wall, between stucco dies to area,returned up steps to doorway, the flanking pedestals surmounted by cast iron lamp standards. Although the interior has been much altered since its incorporation into Asprey's premises, it retains original staircase of typical Taylor design with apsed end well rising full height to oval lantern with waterleaf trim and fluted frieze, resolved by pendentives into a barrel vault over apse with guilloche moulding. The stone stairs with cut string and moulded soffit have scrolled wrought iron balusters, moulded handrail, scrolled out at foot. Built as part of Sir Robert Taylor's development of Grafton Street.
