17 and 18, Great College Street

Numbers 17 and 18 on Great College Street are a pair of terraced houses built around 1720-1722. They feature a brown brick exterior and a tiled roof. Each house has three storeys and a basement, with dormered mansards, and both fronts are two windows wide. The doorways are located on the left and right sides, framed by wooden architraves with cornice hoods supported by carved console brackets. The windows have flush framed glazing bar sashes set beneath flat gauged red brick arches, with rounded arches on the ground floor and flat arches above, along with red brick dressed jambs and stone sills. The buildings have a parapet with coping and a wrought-iron scrolled lamp standard. Number 18 retains its original lead rainwater head and downpipe. Inside, the houses have closet wings at the rear and many rooms still feature their original panelling and box cornices. The passage halls include pilastered archways leading to dog leg closed string staircases with turned balusters and decorative details.
