Description

Numbers 42 and 43 are two terraced houses located on Bedford Row, built around 1693 by Nicholas Barbon. They were refronted in 1965 in a style that replicates the original design. The houses are constructed of brown brick and feature tiled roofs with dormers. They rise three storeys high, with attics and basements, and have three windows along with a half-blind window on each house.

Number 42 has a wooden doorcase with Doric pilasters, a fluted frieze, a pediment, and a dentil cornice, along with a fanlight and a panelled door. It also features red brick dressings and flat arches above the flush-framed sash windows, as well as a cornice below the parapet and a lead rainwater pipe. Number 43 has a wooden doorcase supported by carved brackets that carry a hood, a fanlight, and a panelled door. It includes stone bands at the floor levels, red brick dressings, and flat arches with stucco keystones above the flush-framed sash windows, along with a parapet and a lead rainwater head and pipe.

The interiors have not been inspected but are known to retain early fabric. Additionally, there are attached cast-iron railings with torch flambe finials leading to the areas in front of the houses.
