Description

Number 17 is a terraced house that has been converted into offices. It was built between 1717 and 1718 by Robert Burford, a carpenter, on land that was granted to him and George Devall, a plumber, by Dame Margaret Skipwith in 1716. The house is constructed of brown brick, with the roof hidden behind a parapet.

The building is three windows wide, four storeys tall, and includes an attic and basement. It is two rooms deep with a closet wing and features a brick band at the first floor level. The windows are flush frame sash windows with gauged red brick arches above them. The entrance has a wooden architraved doorcase with well-crafted carved brackets, panelled soffits under flat hoods, a patterned fanlight, and a panelled door.

Inside, there is a panelled entrance and staircase hall, with a Corinthian pilaster forming the inner arch. An early 19th-century staircase leads to the second floor, featuring stick balusters and a continuous handrail. The staircase retains early 18th-century dado panelling with Corinthian pilaster strips up to the first floor. The third floor is accessed by a closed string stair with turned balusters. The ground floor has been opened up as a single room, showcasing early 19th-century Tuscan columns. The front rooms on the second floor still have ovolo-moulded panelling and box cornices.

Additionally, there are cast-iron railings with finials as subsidiary features.
